RECYCLING OF ALUMINUM CANS IS GROWING IN EU TO 63%!

PRESS RELEASE Brussels, May 27, 2010

Overall recycling of beverage cans of aluminum in the 27 EU states, including the countries EFTA and TURKEY, was improved in 2008 and has now reached 63.1%. It improved from 61.8% in 2007 and 57.7% in 2006. This increase of 5.4% over the past two years is an impressive addition to reduction in carbon footprint so it is saved the equivalent of 310,000 tons of CO2.

The total number of beverage cans of aluminum consumed in Europe increased from 32 billion in 2007 to nearly 34 billion units in 2008, resulting in an increase of 70% in aluminum cans market across Europe.

In Europe consumers use an average of 42 doses of aluminum per capita. The consumption of aluminum cans in Western Europe increased while in most of the countries from Central and East European consumption remained stable.

Sales of the filled beverage cans of aluminum, for most European markets including exports to non-European countries, increased by more than 5% to 39 billion units with strong growth in Western Europe about 10%, while in Central and Eastern Europe increased by 3%.

Although recycling rates varies greatly from one country to another, is a clear trend growing in Europe. While most countries with well-established deposits and return systems have maintained high levels of recycling, other countries have also improved the level.

Local authorities and waste operators are always aware of the high value of well sorted aluminum scraps, even in difficult economic times we see a growing investment in sorting technology and latest technology recycling. Aluminum industry, supported by its partners, the manufacturers of cans, promotes additional collection and sorting methods and local activities which are key factors in the continuation of growing the packaging of aluminum recycling.

Recycling aluminum beverage consumed cans and their transformation into new cans or high-value aluminum products such as bicycles, window frames or engine blocks save up to 95% of primary energy consumed for production, helping clients such as food and drink manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint.

It also fits very well the strategy proposed by the EU since "2020" and "raw materials Initiative" in which the saving of resources was identified as one of the key priorities.

Aluminium is all around us. It is light and strong, corrosion resistant and durable, formable and highlyconductive; it has natural shine and is 100% recyclable. Aluminium provides intelligent solutions forpresent and future generations. The European Aluminium Association, founded in 1981, represents the European aluminium industryfrom alumina and primary production to semi-finished and end-use products, through to recycling. The European aluminium industry directly employs about 236,000 people.
